The Cabinet Secretary for Education Mr. Julius Ogamba has called on the Technical University of Kenya to maintain its position as the leading TVET institution in the country and the region. Speaking during the University’s 14th Graduation Ceremony, the CS further commended TU-K for standing tall terming the institution a beacon of excellence in technical and vocational education in the region.
“TU-K holds a unique and invaluable place in the history of Kenya’s education system, with roots stretching back to the colonial era and deep links to the post-independence growth of our nation. Over the decades, the institution—formerly known as Kenya Polytechnic—has consistently produced highly skilled and competent manpower.”
The CS termed TU-K as a pillar of national development and therefore fulfilling its academic mandate as well as demonstrating exemplary community engagement. He gave an example of the University’s active involvement in the Mastercard and KCB partnership programme whereby TU-K is playing a crucial role in equipping young entrepreneurs within Nairobi and its surrounding areas.
“Such efforts showcase how TU-K is embracing its role as an agent of change, directly impacting society and challenging the outdated stereotype of universities as isolated Ivory Towers. Instead, TU-K exemplifies how higher learning institutions can be dynamic partners in social and economic transformation. Innovation and Financial Sustainability.”
CS Ogamba explained that the Ministry of Education was proactively working with the National Treasury to address issues arising from the recent industrial matters, including the return-to-work agreements signed with staff unions.
He noted that the ceremony marked a pivotal moment in the academic calendar of the university, as well as in the lives of each graduating student adding that graduation represents not just the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, but also the dawn of new opportunities and responsibility.
CS Ogamba thanked families and sponsors for their immense commitment and self-denial of resources in order to support their children in completing their university programmes.
While congratulating the graduands he said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every graduand present here today. This achievement is concrete evidence of your perseverance, discipline, and relentless pursuit of knowledge.”
He challenged local universities to empower students and staff to transform skills and ideas into tangible entrepreneurial ventures, thereby bridging budgetary gaps and enriching Kenya’s economy and preparing graduands to become global citizens.
He encouraged graduands to embrace the boundless opportunities available in an increasingly interconnected and digital world.
“Take advantage of platforms such as Digtalent to develop the right skills, gain hands-on experience in your chosen fields, and remain vigilant for opportunities wherever they may arise across the globe. The education and knowledge you have acquired here provide a robust foundation for you to adapt and thrive in any work environment internationally.”
