The Technical University of Kenya today held its 14 th graduation ceremony, where more than 2,200 graduands, including a record 39 Master’s and 24 PhDs, the highest postgraduate achievement in the University's history were awarded degrees and diplomas.
Present during the ceremony were the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mr. Julius Ogamba, State Department for Research, Science and Innovation Principal Secretary, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Chancellor, Hon. Dr. Jared Kangwana, Chairman of Council, Dr. Idle Farah, Members of the University Council and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Benedict Mutua.
Dr. Farah noted the drastic rise from last year’s 13 Master’s and 7 PhDs to the current 39 Master’s and 24 PhDs, attributing the progress to strong leadership, rigorous academic standards, and a committed management team. He also thanked the members of Council for approving 16 new governance and administrative policies, underscoring the University’s strides in transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency. Dr. Farah also said there had been significant staff welfare gains, including the implementation of a comprehensive medical insurance scheme covering outpatient, inpatient, maternity, dental, and optical services.”
Acknowledging recent industrial disruptions that affected public universities nationwide, Dr. Farah thanked Government negotiators, union representatives, and the TU-K Management for their role in restoring stability. He particularly recognised Prof. Mutua’s relentless engagement during the negotiations, describing his leadership as the glue that held the process together. In his address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mutua congratulated the Class of 2025 for their resilience, sacrifice, and adaptability in an era shaped by technological disruption, climate change, geopolitical uncertainties, and advancing artificial intelligence. He noted that TU-K had intentionally transformed its academic model to respond to this changing world. “We have seen major institutional strides achieved this year, anchored to the University’s 2023–2027 Strategic Plan and guided by performance contracts that have shown year-on-year improvement.” “TU-K continues to position itself as a leading applied research and technical institution in the region, a status affirmed when the university was named Africa’s Best Technical and Vocational Institution at the third African Academia Awards held in Kigali, Rwanda”, the VC highlighted Prof. Mutua asserted that TU-K was steadily redesigning its curricula to integrate AI, digital skills, and labour market responsiveness, while reinforcing entrepreneurship and innovation across all programmes. He emphasised that TU-K was intentionally becoming an entrepreneurial university, preparing graduates for leadership roles and for solving Africa’s most pressing challenges.
He also acknowledged the faculty and staff for their dedication to teaching, research, and mentorship, stating that many had gone beyond the call of duty to prepare the graduating class for success. Parents, guardians, and sponsors were equally celebrated for their foundational support. As the institution celebrated the Class of 2025, the message from University management, government representatives, and the council was clear, TU-K is entering a new chapter of academic excellence, digital transformation, and research growth. The ceremony reinforced the university’s mission to produce competent, ethical, and innovative graduates who will shape Kenya’s economic, technological, and social future.
