The Department of Hospitality and Human Ecology recently showcased the innovative final-year projects of Bachelor of Fashion Design and Technology students through a fashion exhibition themed; `Sustainable Practices in Design’. The students presented contemporary garments made from second-hand clothing, beddings, curtains and fabric off-cuts using up-cycling and recycling techniques.
Their collections demonstrated how discarded materials can be transformed into high-quality fashion pieces, reducing textile waste while minimising the cost of using new fabrics. Ag. Thematic Leader, Fashion, Clothing and Textile, Naomi Wangari Njuguna, noted that the showcase aligns with the department's ongoing METODIC Project titled; Strengthening the Links Between Industry and Academia for a Sustainable Textile Sector that Promotes Circular Economy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She said the project strengthens collaboration between industry and academia while equipping students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to promote sustainable practices and circular production models in the fashion and textile sector.
