National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) has embarked on TU-K’s Institutional Scientific and Ethics Review Committee (ISERC) accreditation assessment. The assessment session which marked part of the accreditation process, was held on Thursday 2nd October 2025. The meeting brought together the University Management, members of the ISERC and the NACOSTI assessment team.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Institutional Advancement and Enterprises (IAE) Prof. Paul Wambua (representing the Vice-Chancellor), reaffirmed the University’s strategic commitment in fostering a culture of ethical and impactful research. His counterpart in charge of Research and Technology Development (DVC–RTD) Prof. Isaac Orina, outlined the University’s preparedness, citing robust structures, trained membership and operational procedures to ensure credible and ethical scientific review.
TUK’s ISERC was formally appointed in December 2022 and underwent capacity-building training facilitated by KEMRI-SERU in March 2023. In April 2024, the University submitted its application to NACOSTI for accreditation, marking a key step in aligning with the national standards for research governance. Prof. Dorrington Ogoyi, the chairperson of TUK-ISERC, emphasised the committee’s readiness to review and monitor research projects in line with ethical and regulatory frameworks.
The NACOSTI assessment team was led by the Deputy Director of Institutional Registration and Accreditation, Ms. Christine Apakoreng, who engaged with the committee on accreditation requirements. The session featured presentations, interactive discussions, and review of institutional documentation.
Once accredited, TUK-ISERC will further strengthen the ability to safeguard ethical research practices, enhance compliance with thenNational regulations and contribute to Kenya’s leadership in responsible and impactful research across the region.
